How do I create and apply tags for student time multipliers in Accommodations Details?
Canvas recently introduced differentiation tags in the People tool, which allows instructors to group students without students being able to see it. Instructors can use the Accommodations Details tool to group students with tags by their time multiplier accommodations (for example, 1.5x, 1.75x, or 2.0x). Once tags are created, instructors can give specific assignment and assessment availability dates or due dates to students marked with a differentiation tag.
During the 2026 spring semester, the Accommodations Details tool is available for beta testing. If you would like to participate in beta testing, please contact the Learning Technology Services (LTS) team.
Go to Accommodations Details.
Open the Create Tag tab.
Select a multiplier.
From the Select a multiplier dropdown menu, select which multipliers you want to set up as differentiation tags. The list may include the following:
- All
- 1.5
- 1.75
- 2.0
- 2.25
- 2.5
- 2.75
- 3.0
You will only be presented with multipliers that students have in your course. In the screenshot above, the course only has students that have 1.5 and 1.75 multipliers. To create differentiation tags for all time multipliers at once, select All.
Select a tag set.
If you haven't created differentiation tags for accommodations in this course, we recommend creating a new tag set. If you have already created a differentiation tag set in the People tool for accommodations, skip to the Add to an existing tag set step.
Create a new tag set.
- Select Create a new Tag Set from the Select a tag set dropdown menu.
- Enter a Tag set name, such as Accommodations. The tags for each multiplier (for example, 1.5, 2.0, etc.) will be created within the tag set.
- Select OK to create the tag set.
Add to an existing tag set.
- Select Add to: followed by the tag set name where you want to add these time multiplier tags. For example, if an instructor had previously created a tag set called "All Accommodations", they would select Add to: All Accommodations.
- Select OK to add the multiplier differentiation tags to the existing tag set.
Confirm the tags were created.
When the tags are successfully created, a green checkmark and a list of the new tags will appear. Select OK to close the message.
Assigning time multipliers to students with tags.
After the tags are created, you can assign a quiz or assignment to the tag with specific availability and due dates. Follow the steps below:
- Open a quiz or assignment where students need accommodations.
- Add an Assign To card for each differentiation tag with the appropriate availability and due dates.
- If you are assigning a quiz that has a time limit, you may need to take an additional step to apply the quiz time accommodations for each student.
