How do I enable cookies in my browser?

External tools integrated into Canvas require third-party cookies to be enabled in your web browser. If cookies are not enabled, you may encounter errors when trying to access content or complete activities in tools such as the following:

  • Media Gallery and My Media
  • Online Meetings (Zoom)
  • Gradescope
  • UVA Bookstore Inclusive Access

Follow the steps below to enable third-party cookies in your web browser:

Enable cookies in Google Chrome.

The steps to enable cookies in Google Chrome vary slightly based on your operating system.  See the steps for Mac below, or skip to the steps for Chrome in Windows.

To enable cookies in Chrome for Mac, access the Settings option.

Select Settings from the Chrome menu at the top of your screen, or press Command  () + comma (,) on your keyboard.

Select Privacy and security.

Select Privacy and security from the Settings menu.

Select Site settings.

Select the Site settings option under Privacy and security.

Select Third-party cookies.

Select the Allow third-party cookies option.

Under Third-party cookies, select Allow third-party cookies. Alternatively, select Block third-party cookies in Incognito and be sure to always load Canvas in a regular browser window (not Incognito).

Or, allow cookies from only UVA ITS sites.

If you would prefer to continue blocking cookies from other sites, you can allow cookies from UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) sites, including Canvas.

Next to Sites allowed to use third-party cookies, select Add.

Enter an allowed URL.

  1. In the Site field, enter [*.]its.virginia.edu to allow cookies from all UVA ITS websites, including Canvas.
  2. Select Add.
View the allowed site.

Confirm that [*.]its.virginia.edu is listed under Sites allowed to use third-party cookies.

To enable cookies in Chrome for Windows, access the Settings option.

  1. Select the Customize and control Google Chrome (three dots) menu, or press Alt + F on your keyboard.
  2. Select Settings.

Tip: A dot to the left of the toggle switch indicates the "off" position and a dot to the right of the toggle switch indicates an "on" position. In the screenshot above, Block third-party cookies is in the "off" position.

To enable cookies in Safari for macOS, open the browser Settings.

Select Settings from the Safari menu at the top of your screen, or press Command () + Comma (,)  on your keyboard.

Select Privacy and uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking.

  1. Select Privacy

Go to Advanced Settings.

  2. Alternatively, select the Advanced (cogs icon) option from the menu.

Uncheck Block all cookies.

To enable cookies in Safari for iOS or iPadOS, open the Settings app.

Select Apps, then Safari.

  1. Select Apps from the bottom of the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Safari.

Tip: You can use the Search bar near the upper-right corner of the screen to find the Safari app.

Toggle off Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.

Select Advanced.

Scroll to the bottom of the right-hand Safari menu and select Advanced.
