Review Assignments content.

The Assignments tool in Canvas is organized based on the Blackboard site's Grade Center structure. Each graded item is listed under a Canvas assignment group. The name of the assignment group is a heading.

The following items may be included in assignment groups:

  • Assignments added in Blackboard,
  • Items that were created manually within the Blackboard Gradebook,
  • Tests added in Blackboard,
  • Journals,
  • Blogs,
  • Graded surveys added in Blackboard and migrated as quizzes in Canvas.

All items listed in Assignments will also appear in Canvas Grades. Canvas treats almost all activities as assignments, including assessments and items that don't require student submissions.

Tip: You can use the information in this article as you work through Step 1: Review in the Checklist for Reusing Content from Blackboard. Go back to the checklist for additional steps.

Go to Assignments.

Select Assignments from the Course Navigation Menu.

Review Assignments and assignment group organization.

Your assignments will all be placed in different assignment groups and may not be in the order you expect. Depending on how the Gradebook was set up in Blackboard, you will find one or more assignment groups in Canvas. For more information about assignment groups, see How do I add an assignment group in a course? (opens new window).

Assignment groups for Blackboard Gradebook Items

Any Gradebook Category in Blackboard that is populated with activities will migrate to Canvas. The following may appear:

  1. Survey: This assignment group was created to house assessments from the Survey tool in Blackboard. If copied surveys were not Graded in Blackboard, the survey will be available as a Quiz but not present in any assignment group in Canvas.
  2. Test: This assignment group represents the default Test Gradebook Category in Blackboard and was created to house any tests associated with that category.
  3. Assignment: This assignment group represents the default Assignment Gradebook Category in Blackboard and was created to house any assignments associated with that category.
  4. Discussion: This assignment group was created to house graded discussion topics.

Assignment group for items that were Uncategorized in Blackboard

An assignment group named Assignments was created to house assignments, tests and surveys that were not in a Gradebook Category in Blackboard. Additionally, if the activity was manually added as an item in the Grade Center, it will be found in this group.

Assignment group for Journals from Blackboard

If you used Journals in your Blackboard course, they will migrate as assignments in a separate assignment group also named Assignments.
