Review Assignments content.

The Assignments tool in UVACanvas is organized based on the UVACollab site's Gradebook structure. Each graded item is listed under a Canvas assignment group. The name of the assignment group is a heading.

If the UVACollab Gradebook had categories enabled, an assignment group was created for each category. Additionally, a % of Total value appears to the right of the title when Categories & weighting were used in UVACollab's Gradebook.

The following items may be included in assignment groups:

  • Assignments added in UVACollab,
  • Items that were created manually within the UVACollab Gradebook,
  • Assessments found in the Working Copies tab of the UVACollab Tests & Quizzes tool.

All items listed in Assignments will also appear in Canvas Grades. Canvas treats almost all activities as assignments, such as assessments and items that don't require student submissions.

Tip: You can use the information in this article as you work through Step 1: Review in the Checklist for Reusing Content from UVACollab. Go back to the checklist for additional steps.

Go to Assignments.

Select Assignments from the Course Navigation Menu.

Review Assignments organization.

Depending on how the Gradebook was set up in UVACollab, you will find one or more assignment groups in Canvas. For more information about assignment groups, see How do I add an assignment group in a course? (opens new window).

Groups for a UVACollab Gradebook with No categories

If the UVACollab Gradebook was configured with No categories, assignments are organized in automatically-created assignment groups. The screenshot above displays two of these assignment groups, Items sent to Gradebook and Assignments. The following may appear:

  • Items sent to Gradebook: This assignment group was created if some assignments and/or assessments in your UVACollab site had their grades sent to the Gradebook and others did not. Items sent to the UVACollab Gradebook are included in this group.
  • Assignments: This assignment group was created to house assignments from the Assignments tool that did not have grades sent to the Gradebook.
  • Discussions: This assignment group was created to house graded discussion topics. It will be empty in all copied sites because copied discussions were not marked as Graded.
  • Quizzes: This assignment group was created to house assessments from the Tests & Quizzes tool that did not have grades sent to the Gradebook.

Groups for a UVACollab Gradebook with Categories

If the UVACollab Gradebook was configured with Categories, there is an assignment group for each category. If the Gradebook included Categories & weighting, the assignment groups are weighted accordingly.

You may also find one or more automatically-created assignment groups in your copied UVACollab site. If the UVACollab Gradebook used Categories & weighting, these automatically-created groups have a weight of 0% of Total. The screenshot above displays two of these assignment groups, Discussions and Quizzes, each with a 0% of Total weight. The following may appear:

  • Assignments: This assignment group was created to house assignments from the Assignments tool that did not have grades sent to the Gradebook.
  • Discussions: This assignment group was created to house graded discussion topics. It will be empty in all copied sites because copied discussions were not marked as Graded.
  • Quizzes: This assignment group was created to house assessments from the Tests & Quizzes tool that did not have grades sent to the Gradebook.

Review assignments from UVACollab Assignments.

Assignments from UVACollab's Assignments tool will appear in Canvas Assignments as Unpublished. The items are unpublished by default so that when they are imported to a live course, students will not be able to see them.

If an assignment's grade was not sent to the Gradebook in UVACollab, the Canvas assignment has the option Do not count this assignment towards the final grade enabled.

Edit an assignment to review its settings. For additional information, see How do I add or edit details in an assignment? (opens new window).

Note: If an assignment in UVACollab used a rubric from iRubric for grading, the rubric will not appear in Canvas. You will be able to edit these assignments to use iRubric.

Review assignments created from Gradebook items.

  • If an item was manually created in the UVACollab Gradebook (i.e., not attached to an assignment in Assignments or assessment in Tests & Quizzes), a corresponding unpublished assignment will be created for it in Canvas Assignments with the No Submission setting.
  • If an assessment from UVACollab's Tests & Quizzes was set in the Working Copies tab not to send grades to the Gradebook, but the same quiz in Published Copies did have that setting enabled, you may find additional No Submission assignments in Canvas Assignments with the same names as the quizzes.

Review assessments from UVACollab Tests & Quizzes.

Assessments, except for Practice Quizzes and Ungraded Surveys, will also appear as unpublished in the Assignments tool in UVACanvas. If your UVACollab site had an assessment that was set to be available to Anyone with the link (Anonymous survey), the equivalent Canvas quiz will be an Ungraded Survey and will not appear in Assignments.

For steps to review assessments, see Review assessments from Tests & Quizzes.
