How do I add an external tool assignment in UVACanvas?

UVACanvas includes a number of external tool integrations to support specialized instructional and assessment needs. Many of these tools allow you to create graded assignments or assessments and have the grades sent automatically to the Canvas Gradebook.

This article provides links to help documentation with general steps to create external tool assignments and specific instructions for assignments that use the following tools:

Add an external tool assignment.

You can find general steps to set up an external tool assignment in How do I add an assignment using an external app? (opens new window).

Detailed instructions for using specific tools are linked below.

Media Tools

You can create an assignment where students record, upload, and/or interact with media using My Media or Media Gallery (Kaltura), Panopto Video, or Studio. How you set up the assignment depends on whether students will be recording and/or uploading their own files or interacting with videos you make available to them.

To have students submit files they record or upload via My Media/Media Gallery, follow the steps in How do I set up a video or audio assignment using Media Gallery?

For steps to create a Kaltura video quiz and have its grades sent to the Canvas Gradebook, see:

Panopto Video

To have students submit files they record or upload via Panopto, follow the steps in How to Create a Video Assignment in Canvas (opens new window).

For steps to create a Panopto video quiz and have its grades sent to the Canvas Gradebook, see:

Studio

To have students submit files they record or upload via Studio, follow the steps in How do I add a Canvas Studio media assignment in a Canvas course as an instructor? (opens new window).

For steps to create a Studio video quiz and have its grades sent to the Canvas Gradebook, see:

Flip

Follow the steps in Set up Canvas LTI integration (opens new window) to install and configure the Flip tool and create assignments using it.

The Flip tool must be installed individually in each course where you will use it.

Note: Recent updates to the Flip tool have made it difficult for students to post video comments within a browser window. We are working with Microsoft on this issue.

VoiceThread and Canvas Discussions (with My Media or Studio in the Rich Content Editor) also support including video in posts. For more information about using one of these tools, see the section on VoiceThread below or Media Tools above.
