How do I add a file from My Media to a module?

You can add a link to a video, audio, or image file in a module using the Add External Tool option and embedding the file from My Media.

Note: Linking a media file in Modules will not allow you to include text that will display with your file. See the tip below for other options.

Tip: Adding a page to a module (opens new window) and embedding a media file in the page will allow you to add context around your file. This can improve accessibility by making it easier for students to understand how they are expected to interact with the content. For steps, see How do I embed a file from My Media in the Rich Content Editor? (opens new window).

For steps to record or upload media at the same time as embedding it, see the following articles.

Go to Modules.

You may either embed the video, audio, or image file with the default player settings, or edit the settings before embedding it to customize the player.

To use the default settings, select Embed.

  1. You will be taken to a page to choose your settings. Change these settings as desired.
  2. Select Embed to confirm embedding the media.

Tip: Embedding a Player with Transcript is recommended for video and audio accessibility. For more information, see How can I use a transcript in Media Gallery? (opens new window).

Note:

  • By default, the checkbox Set as my default settings for media type: will be selected. Keeping this box checked will change your default embed settings for the type of file you are embedding (video, audio, or image) to the settings you select.
  • If you select a Downloads Enabled Player, anyone who plays the video or audio file or views the image on the page where it is embedded will be able to download the media file, its audio transcript(s), and any files you attach to it. If you are embedding a video that was created with multiple recording inputs using either Kaltura Capture (opens new window) or the Record in Browser screen sharing feature (opens new window), viewers will be able to download each recorded video as separate files.

View and edit the Page Name. (Optional)

Don't forget to publish the module (if it was not previously published) and the link to your media file using the Publish options in the Modules tool when you're ready to make the file available to students. For steps, see How do I publish or unpublish a module as an instructor? (opens new window).

Add captions for accessibility (if not already added).

If you have embedded a video or audio file that does not yet have captions, don't forget to follow the steps to request captions in My Media (opens new window) to make the file accessible!
