How do I add or remove waitlisted students in my Canvas course?

Instructors and TAs can use the Manage SIS Sections tool to include waitlisted students from any or all sections in their Canvas course site.

The tool can also be used to remove waitlisted students it previously added to the site. Skip to the steps to remove waitlisted students.

Add Waitlisted Students.

Go to Settings.

Select Settings from the Course Navigation Menu.

Select Manage SIS Sections.

Select the Manage SIS Sections button.

Note: Depending on the width of your internet browser window, this button will appear on either the right side or near the bottom of the page.

Confirm the course information.

The waitlisted students will be added to sections in the course site in which you are currently working.

Review the name and course code displayed in the Course Information section to ensure you are adding waitlisted students in the appropriate site before proceeding.

Select Continue.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Continue.

Select section(s) to include waitlisted students.

  1. On the Manage Waitlisted Students page, select the checkbox(es) for the section(s) where waitlisted students should be added. To add waitlisted students to all sections in the course site, select the Add waitlisted students for all sections checkbox that appears at the top of the list.
  2. Select Continue.

Confirm changes.

An overview of the selected changes will be displayed. Select the Save button to confirm them.

Note: It may take up to two hours after saving changes for the waitlisted students to appear in your course site. You can check either the People or Photo Roster tool to verify if they have been added.

Remove Waitlisted Students.

Go to Settings.

Select Settings from the Course Navigation Menu.

Select Manage SIS Sections.

Select the Manage SIS Sections button.

Note: Depending on the width of your internet browser window, this button will appear on either the right side or near the bottom of the page.

The waitlisted students will be removed from sections in the course site in which you are currently working.

Review the name and course code displayed in the Course Information section to ensure you are removing waitlisted students in the appropriate site before proceeding.

Select Continue.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Continue.

Deselect section(s) to remove waitlisted students.

  1. On the Manage Waitlisted Students page, deselect the checkbox(es) for the section(s) where waitlisted students should be removed. To remove waitlisted students from all sections in the course site, deselect the Add waitlisted students for all sections checkbox that appears at the top of the list.
  2. Select Continue.

Confirm changes.
