The Kaltura media players will be updated on May 16, 2025!

The UVA Learning Technology Services (LTS) team is excited to announce that we are preparing to complete our updates to Kaltura in UVACanvas.

Note: The players in Media Gallery have already been updated. If you publish files directly in Media Gallery without embedding them in your course, you will not be impacted by these changes.

What's happening next?

The updates will begin on May 16, 2025. At that time:

  • Legacy media players no longer supported by Kaltura will be removed as options to embed new media.
  • Media embedded with a legacy player in UVACanvas will be automatically migrated to a new player.

The My Media and Media Gallery tools, and their included content, will remain available during the player migration. The LTS team will post a global announcement in UVACanvas once the migration process is complete.

What do I need to do afterwards?

After the migration process completes, you should review embedded Kaltura files in any previous course sites that you plan to copy and reuse in the future:

  1. Press Play: Ensure the files play as expected.
  2. Verify other controls are accessible: If you find a player where you can't access or use a button such as Pause or open the transcript (opens new window) for a file with captions, please email the LTS team with the link to the page where the affected file appears. You can find a page's link by visiting it and copying the link from your browser's address bar.
  3. Edit content if needed: If you would prefer automatically modified content to display differently, edit the page. If desired, you can replace a migrated embedded file with the same file using different player dimensions and/or settings by deleting an embedded file, then re-embedding it. For steps to re-embed files, see How do I embed a file from My Media in the Rich Content Editor? (opens new window).

What about embedded content migrated from other systems?

Embedded Kaltura content that was previously migrated from UVACollab or Blackboard will not be migrated to the new players. If you plan to reuse any of this older content, you should re-embed the media with a new player to ensure that it will continue working as expected for students. For steps to re-embed files, see How do I embed a file from My Media in the Rich Content Editor? (opens new window).

What if I need help with re-embedding files?

If you encounter any issues re-embedding files, please contact the LTS team at [email protected] for assistance. Please include the following information in your email:

  • The link to the page where you need to re-embed the file. You can find a page's link by visiting it and copying the link from your browser's address bar.
  • If the affected file is embedded in a quiz question, the number of the question in the quiz.
  • If known, the name of the video, audio, or image file that needs to be re-embedded.
  • If the affected media file is owned by another instructor, the instructor's UVA computing ID or email address.
