What is the Panopto Video tool?
Panopto Video allows instructors to record lectures or upload videos and make them available to their course site participants. Instructors may also allow students to upload video assignments using the tool.
Note: Instructors may find steps to add Panopto Video and other tools to their course in How do I manage Course Navigation links? (opens new window).
Important:
- For students to access Panopto videos that have been embedded in other tools within a Canvas course site, for example, Modules or Pages, they may need to select the Panopto Video link in the site's Course Navigation Menu before playing those videos.
- Panopto videos that have not been played in 2 years are automatically archived. Videos that have not been played in 4 years are permanently deleted.
Panopto Video Features
Instructors can:
- Record lectures or discussions in a classroom on grounds at UVA (opens new window) and make the recordings available to students in their Canvas course site automatically through the course's Panopto folder.
- Record videos in their internet browser and add them to a course's Panopto folder.
- Record videos using the Panopto Recorder software and add them to a course's Panopto folder. (This recording method is strongly recommended over using the option to record in the internet browser.)
- Upload pre-recorded videos to a course's Panopto folder.
- Embed recorded or uploaded videos in a page or module in Canvas.
- Edit videos. Editing options include trimming or cutting videos, attaching slides to videos, and inserting a public YouTube video into a video recorded or uploaded in Panopto.
- Add and edit captions and transcripts on videos.
- Share and copy videos.
- Allow students to record and upload videos to submit as assignments.
- Encourage viewer engagement with features such as comments, notes, and in-video quizzing.
- Disable or moderate comments on videos.
- Organize videos in playlists or subfolders within a Panopto course folder.
Students can:
- Add comments or notes to specific timestamps in a video.
- Search videos and skip to a timestamp in a video where a search term was mentioned.
- Record or upload and embed videos in a Canvas assignment or a Panopto assignment folder, if enabled by an instructor.
